And replace oil consumption with coal and natural gas which comprises about 70% of the power grid in the US and typically DOES NOT reduce carbon footprint (considering inefficiencies in power distribution, transmission, and storage). We’re largely robbing Peter to pay Paul. But we do reduce our dependence on foreign oil because coal comes from the US.

Of course that’s too complicated for most people (eg the need to clean up the power grid, grid and storage inefficiencies, battery carbon production footprint and weight) They want simple concepts so they feel good and so companies, as usual, can capitalize on a trend without actually delivering much of the value they claim. We also need to consider hybrids which are pretty efficient with regenerative breaking and engines designed for cruising efficiency (because the electric motor provides the low RPM acceleration)
