If you’re lucky you can counter them via transparency (eg forcing them to answer questions publically or be accountable to their claims). That’s difficult to do, but easier in more controlled environments in a work environment. not always feasible, but always a good idea to remind people to focus on those things they can control, and walk away from impossible situations.
