As a green energy lobbyist and cybersecurity architect I can assert that when it comes to managing risk and creating a roadmap for the future the biggest problem by far is that the vast majority of people just don’t want to put in the effort. Where is the reward? For example, even today getting organizations to spend a reasonable amount of resources on cybersecurity is extremely difficult. If you spend a lot and do a great job, what happens? Absolutely nothing, all you did was spend money and nobody cares. Furthermore how to do you measure success both short term and long term. Virtually impossible. And when it comes to people’s personal choices it’s even worse.
Our culture does not have the capability of managing such complexity. Even a strong leader struggles as it’s virtually impossible communicate anything complicated with a large group of people. Simplicity and short term thinking will almost always win. And our social media environment just keeps making it worse and worse.
