Most people want somebody who makes the relationship about them, and meets their expectations about how people should behave - they talk about pop culture, they don't have strong opinions about anything that might differ with their opinions, they follow the standard programmed definition of romance (buy flowers, whisper sweet nothings, etc.). What the advice should be is yea, sure be yourself, but been prepared to wait a long time to find the right person, ditch people who don't like the real you as fast as possible, and if you want to date casually for a while, consider that you should dress nice and keep your mouth shut about your real self and you'll be more successful.
