Cognitive dissonance will make people do crazy things. Ie:
1) I voted for Trump
2) I’m infallible
3) I’m not a lunatic
4) If I admit Trump is a lunatic, then that must mean I’m a lunatic because I’m infallible
5) Therefore charges against Trump are not valid
6) Ensuring I’m perfect, and maintaining my identity as smart, infallible person is more important than the health of the country
7) I rather die and destroy my children’s future, than change my identity
Of course the real logic is that most politicians are crap (on both sides), and most of us don’t trust them. This has resulted in economic inequality, frustration, and a whole host of other problems. And they feel like voting for Trump is the solution. Maybe voting for him in 2016 to send a warning shot to politicians, made sense, arguably. But not after he tried to overthrow the government.
