I saw the movie, and being involved in the kink scene in San Francisco, and having worked closely with kink.com and kink university I can assert that the movie is a completely inaccurate portrayal of kink, which is not surprising given that the writer and the producers have no experience with this world. They produced their own fantasy….and got rich doing it. I would say shame on them, but that’s Hollywood for you.

Let’s compare Real Kink with Fifty Shades of Horseshit:

Real Kink

  • Very playful
  • People usually know each pretty well and have established trust
  • The shame and beating is a play scene and doesn’t translate to their actual relationship and everybody knows it. Usually before and after the scene they have playful and normal conversations

Fifty Shades of Horseshit

  • Peppy fun girl meets creepy billionaire
  • Peppy fun girl is interested in him because he has a lot of money. It’s clearly not his personality
  • Creepy guy has creepy and abusive relationship and creepy sex with girl. Oh and he’s into kink, but obviously knows very little about it most likely because he has no friends.

Of course creepy sells over reality, and once again Hollywood misleads people and harms many people with its drama inducing horseshit. And in this case, people are left being even less informed about kink and the psychology and attitudes about it (actually mislead).
