I think it's Karma. This sense that, bottom line, you believe that being good, gives you good fortune. And it does, because of your reputation. And it also feels good. Must be a mammal thing.

Religion is probably totally irrelevant. I suspect there is no correlation between your religious beliefs and whether or not you're an asshole.
