I was an environmental lobbyist during the 2nd half of the Obama administration. I was shocked at the level of apathy from just about everybody I met. The various politicians, lobbyists, and corporate players we’re trying to figuring out the shortest path to money and power. And regular folks would talk at parties and on Facebook how they care about the environment, but when it came to asking for engagement on it, crickets. And those activists who did get together were hopelessly disorganized, idealistic, and arrogant. Everybody thought somebody else was going to make sure this moved forward properly.
Our culture is really bad at understanding risk and deploying resources to properly handle risk. Dealing with the environment is an extremely complex topic, that nobody, and not the government is capable of handling. Unless the younger generation has an epiphany moment and can harness the experience, motivation, and resources to fix the problem instead of obsessing over Tindr, TV shows, pop music/culture and Hipster life styles nothing is going to change. All the data and logic doesn’t mean anything compare to the challenge of getting people organized. But when Washington is under water, maybe something will happen.
