I’m convinced this is absolutely true. I’m an architect and I manage a lot of engineers, and they seem to think that they can solve all the problems with just their pure low level engineering skills. This is the biggest problem in my work. They don’t understand human behavior and system design, because they don’t respect it, because they don’t understand it, because they don’t have any skills in that area, because they’re nerds.
To solve this problem, I force them to use a process, a template for design assurance. It is a requirement listed in our iso 27001 certification. And if they don’t follow it, which is most of the time, I threaten them and if they still refuse, report them to their boss and the compliance officer, if necessary. In several cases, I’ve gotten them fired because they refused to follow a process.
Of course you can’t do that to somebody like Elon, but you can do it to a lot of these nerds. Asking them nicely it’s not good enough, you have to force them to do it.
