My experience with CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) which includes having worked with executives in one of the largest and prestigious firms in the world that has many Fortune 500 customers is that they do a pretty lousy job for obvious reasons. It’s just PR to look good. They don’t commit resources to do a proper job ensuring things like logistics, follow through and measuring results and adjusting as appropriate mainly because they don’t really care. No surprise there.
But I concur that CSR can more often be more effective than government action due to better marketing reach and resources. But results are hit and miss and can be improved. With more NGO and citizen oversight. People need to get used to holding government and corporate accountable for RESULTS on a more consistent basis. I’m wondering how such a meme / concepts get enhanced in the society’s DNA.
