Occam’s Razor: He is wrecking it because
1) He’s got some grand strategy
2) He’s full of incredible hubris and has reached his level of incompetence as all humans eventually do except maybe a few like Steve Jobs, Lincoln, and Washington did.

But the difference is they always made sense and had personal charisma. So I’m going with #2.
