Polk street recently grew to become a 20/30 something meet market, and got to the point where people were overflowing onto the street. However about a year and a half ago it peaked and retracted pretty quickly where is now kind of dead. It’s not clear what happened so fast. Several bars were closed and torn down (eg Hemlock), but it had been retracting before that. Maybe the tech trend where people don’t go out has accelerated significantly just in the last few years.
The corner market said their revenues have dropped by 50% in the last five years, and also the variety of the patrons has dropped significantly now being mostly while millennials instead of the color and variety they used to have. They said it used to be fun watching all the variety of folks coming in and I made the evening enjoyable and go quick. Now they’re bored as hell.
