There also so many other reasons:
1) Managers make the decisions and if somebody is a personal threat to them because they’re smarter/ better, they’ll be on the chopping block
2) Some employees help long term value at the expense of short term profits and managers love firing these people. For example anybody involved in risk management, new product development, new markets, improving customer experience, training and diversity, etc.
