We have over 700 videos on our YouTube channel about Underground San Francisco with a wide range of topics such alternative lifestyles, impact of Tech on culture and politics, the life of entertainers, city politics, sex, and kink. Our sex and kink videos consistently get about 5000 times more attention than everything else. I have a similar experience with blogs. This is what people want…trash. It’s been this way since before the Internet with the obsession with Sitcom and sports for example. Desire for Trash over everything else is human nature, it’s who we are. The Internet is just augmenting who we are. It’s not the fault of technology or business. These things are just very efficient at giving us what we want.
The question is how does the minority of us who are interested in quality remain intact and sane with surrounded by this shit. I see a few ways:
- Work only with highly driven business people (eg Tech companies, corporate).. the singular focus on making money and collecting power is distasteful, but at least you are interacting with smart people who largely don’t waste their time with the tabloid crap, and at least you’ll be banking in the dollars and protecting yourself and your family. I can’t blame people for doing this
- Become an activist. Most of them are hopelessly disorganized and idealistic. But at least you’ll be surrounded with smart passionate people.
- Focus on the joys of your family and hobbies
- Inspire our children to find themselves early in life before the brainwashing regimen is complete. And maybe in the future when we’re all dead, they’ll fix this mess
