Yup..and we need to fight a two front battle:

  1. Rallying for politicians to break up the big networks and/or enforce transparency like with the union in Europe going up against YouTube
  2. Build these small networks

I was a lobbyist and can attest to how difficult #1 is to actually do properly given that Washington is driven by money and “theater” (looking good but not being good). Ultimately i couldn’t stand working in that money driven / bro environment anymore and quit and went trans (I’m a fellow trans Jew): But we should try — eg I’m working on a project to propose how to force Facebook and YouTube to handle deepfake videos (I’m a cybersecurity practitioner in SF)

#2 has a lot of interesting possibilities. I’m interested in ones that allow a federated arrangement where small networks connect with larger networks. I’m looking at blockchain options that tie into other publishing and comments platforms.

“How to Kill a City” looks super interesting, we’re facing that really bad in San Francisco as tech devours our culture here and leaves it for dead. I live two blocks from Divas, the trans bar that recently closed. It’s so depressing to see visitors coming to SF wanting to meet trans, lesbian or other alt folks and that’s all gone in a few short years. Replaced by white bro culture. I left the ‘burbs to get away from them and they not only “followed” me here, they desecrated the place.
